It's kind of like if Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights were a dance party inside the Depot.

A note from Jeff Prenevost, Michigan Pops Choir Director:

They're parties, not "shows" or "concerts", but they should be pretty spiff-o parties, with a band or two, singers, dancers, storytelling, maybe poetry readings, games -- kinda like "Sounds & Sights", if S&S were a dance party inside the Depot. If you've ever wished there was "someplace for grown-ups to go out and dance in Chelsea", a club of sorts -- and I've heard many people wish for this – here t’is. The Depot's small, but it's charming and cheap, and it's our best best for now, I think. (Btw, we're always looking for local performers, so if you want to take the floor for a bit or know someone who might, let me or the CCA know!)

Each party's on a theme -- we're calling the first one "The Cool Party", and it's supposed to be on this sort of urban, night life, night club, jazz club-y theme -- so if you want to dress for that, all chic or whatever, that would be fun. But then we've got this (very good) country-ish, blue grass-y band (Bill Bynum & Co.) for “The Cool Party”. So, you know -- whatever. But, good heavens, no sweat pants.

If you've ever wished there was someplace for grown-ups to go out and dance in Chelsea —a club of sorts— here it is!

Our long-term vision is for a regular "village dance-and-performances party", laid-back, affordable, to hang out, make new and tend to old friendships, cut a rug if you want, see and support local performing artists (of which there are a truly astounding number). Would also give local performers an easy, ready-made venue to show their stuff and develop their art, including works-in-progress, in front of a live, friendly crowd. (You'll really want to see the Cabaret Chelsea Dancers from the Tree of Life. Caught a rehearsal -- wow.)

We're putting these parties together on a shoestring of almost unbelievable, insomnia-inducing thinness and frailty (a sign of the times, no doubt), in terms of both manpower and money. If you support all this and you want to know what you can do to help (in addition to going), contact the CCA and tell them you want to be on the Cabaret Chelsea team. No massive commitments -- no set building or costume construction or room decoration here -- everything's "lite" so volunteer-types don't get all stressed out and chuck it -- but, sure, there are to-do's, and many hands light work make. Good chance to meet very cool local folks, too.

Word to the wise: the Depot’s small, so if you want to go, get tickets in advance. Should be a blast. Hope to see you there!
